My family and I are always looking for wholesome, entertaining movies to watch. It seems like they’re getting harder and harder to find. But we did watch one a few weeks ago that left me with a smile on my face and a little extra “fire in the belly“.
It’s called Facing the Giants and tells the story of a high-school football team that hasn’t had a winning season in years. With the help of the head coach, the team takes a new approach to football and starts to win some games.
It doesn’t have any famous actors in it, but it was FULL of great lessons for young kids, including one scene that completely blew me away (and actually left me with a few tears in my eyes). Once you see the clip below, you’ll know why. The video is 5 minutes long but I promise you it will be worth it. Watch it until the very end.
Every time I watch that clip, I feel something inside of me stirring. A desire, a conviction to do more, achieve more, become more. That’s the power of a coach.
The Value of a Coach
I recently came across a quote that made me stop and think:
No one has ever achieve peak performance with out a coach.
That’s a bold statement, so I thought about it for a while. I was skeptical at first. Really? No one? But the more I thought about it, I realized I couldn’t agree more.
Who are some of the greatest athletes in the world? Lebron James. Michael Phelps. Usain Bolt. Did they go it alone, or did they enlist the help of a coach?
What about music? Was Beethoven born with a divine musical gift? Probably, but he also studied under the great Joseph Haydn for number of years during his career.
Coaches are everywhere. They may use different titles, but they are there.
What A Coach Does
I can’t take credit for this but I heard coaching explained the following way. Imagine yourself at the bowling alley looking down the lane. The pins represent your goals in life, the things you’re striving for, and you’re the bowling ball. The bumpers that keep you from falling in the gutter and ultimately help you achieve your goals? Those represent a coach.
There’s an important distinction to make between a psychologist or therapist and a coach. While a psychologist primarily is concerned about your past, a coach is focused on helping you shape your future. That’s what I love about the coaching process.
My Personal Coach
Ever since I read the quote I referenced above, I couldn’t stop thinking about my own peak performance. I try to be disciplined and intentional, and I strive to develop and improve in each area of my life. But a few months ago I felt like a I hit a wall. Not just a wall, but I felt like I was digressing. It was a frustrating and uncomfortable experience and I started to feel a little despondent.
What’s funny is that around that same time, I had two separate people give me generous complements, saying that they looked up to me and that I “had my act together.” I couldn’t help but chuckle because on the inside I was saying, “If you only knew what is going on inside of me right now!”
Luckily for me, I came in contact with a guy that used to work right along side the one and only Tony Robins. After getting to know him better, I talked with my wife and decided it was time to hire a coach and that he was the right man for the job.
Fast forward to today, and I’m a new man. I’ve had several coaching sessions with him, and I can honestly say that I feel MUCH better than I did before. He helped me identify certain beliefs or thought patterns that were ingrained in my brain but actually not helping me. With his help, I’ve replaced some of those old, destructive beliefs with new ones that are much more empowering.
I still face my daily dose of challenges and feelings of inadequacy, but having a coach talk me through those challenges has made a HUGE impact on my attitude and overall demeanor–as a provider, a husband and also as a father.
Get a Coach
If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend investing in yourself and hiring a coach. Whether it’s a business coach, life coach, or success coach, I guarantee that with their help, you’ll be able to go further, faster and higher as you strive to achieve your goals in life.
In short, they will help you do your very own best.
